Street Photography Portrait: David at Muizenberg Kite Beach
This portrait is of David, the car guard at Muizenberg’s kite beach—a quiet guardian who sees everything and misses nothing.
When the wind picks up and the kiters head into the water, David stays alert. The other day, one had left the window of his bakkie (pick-up) wide open before launching. David didn’t hesitate—he called the kiter back in, helped land the kite, watched over his gear, and helped relaunch once he returned.
No one’s kite gear is going missing on David’s watch—not from the beach, not from a car, not while he’s around.
In many ways, this is what street photography is really about for me: not just dramatic moments, but small ones that speak volumes. David isn’t a subject; he’s a presence. Someone with a story, a routine, a purpose. And in a place where wind and movement dominate, he’s steady.
This image is part of my ongoing work observing people in public spaces—where gestures, posture, and presence reveal more than words. It’s about trust, connection, and those who quietly take responsibility for the people around them.
